Brand Africa has announced the 100 best brands in Africa at its 7th annual Brand Africa 100 : MTN, Anbessa, Dangote, and Glo have been recognized as the most admired brands on the continent.

Brand Africa 100 studies and ranks the most admired brands spontaneously recalled by African consumers. In a relatively stable list of the top 100, the South African telecommunications brand MTN is the first African brand to be recalled spontaneously, while the Ethiopian brand Anbessa Shoes, in second place, has traded positions on the Nigerian conglomerate, Dangote, which is the third most admired brand of African origin.

The Top 100 is dominated by technology and electronic brands (29%), consumption (non-cyclical) (19%), clothing (15%), automotive (8%), food (7%) and sport & fitness (5%) are the most important categories.

In total, the 2017/18 Brand Africa 100 list, which began with more than 15,500 brand endorsements covering more than 2,200 admired brands, illustrates a very diverse portfolio of brands and categories in Africa. There is incredible year-to-year consistency, with 60% of the top 10 most admired brands among the top 10 most admired African brands and most admired brands in Africa, led by Dangote and Glo in Nigeria, MTN and Shoprite in South Africa, Tusker in Kenya and Anbessa in Ethiopia. Of the 16 African brands in the Top 100 in 2016/17, six have come out and seven have entered the Top 100 in 2017/18.

Due to their transformational impact in Africa, Brand Africa also includes a sub-study on the media and financial services.

In the media sub-survey, DStv (integrating GoTV, Multichoice and Supersport) is the only Pan-African media brand to feature in the top 10 media.

“THIS RANKING IS AN IMPORTANT MEASUREMENT OF AFRICA’S PROGRESS IN CREATING GLOBAL CLASS LOCAL BRANDS THAT MODIFY THE DISCOURSE ON AFRICA’S COMPETITIVENESS, IMAGE AND REPUTATION AND CONTRIBUTE TO ITS SOCIO-ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION. “
